The history behind KolleKolle conference venue
KolleKolle has an exciting and amusing history that dates back many years before the idea of building a conference venue in Zealand was even conceived.
It turns out that since 1208, there has been a settlement where KolleKolle stands today. However, there is some debate about the origin of the name KolleKolle. Several sources suggest that the name derives from the ancient term ‘Calte Cotae’, meaning ‘cold huts.’ Others argue it may come from caldus or caldo, meaning ‘warm’ in Latin and Italian, respectively, suggesting that the name KolleKolle could mean ‘warm huts.’
Later, in 1776, KolleKolle had developed into a small village consisting of an inn, a few houses, and two farms. In 1839, the two farms merged under the name KolleKolle.
In 1892, Charles Grut-Hansen purchased KolleKolle farm. Known as ‘The King of KolleKolle,’ he became famous for breeding Denmark’s best dairy cattle, the Red Danish Dairy Breed (RDM). This breed was refined, among others, through the famous bull Dan, which put Værløse on the map in Denmark. Dan’s death in 1911 was even reported in the newspaper Politiken.
Grut-Hansen wanted his breeding work to continue, so he co-founded the Zealand Diocesan Cattle Breeders’ Association, which became the universal heir to his estate upon his death in 1922. Daily operations were handed over to J. Fisker, and from 1947 to 1966, his son Svend Fisker managed the estate.
In 1972, the farm buildings were demolished, and an agricultural training and conference property was constructed. This building is what we now know as KolleKolle.
